Taking the Bus or Tram in the Côte d'Azur? Don’t Make This Common Mistake

 

Just a gentle warning when taking public transportation in Nice and the surrounding area:

If you are visiting Nice or the surrounding Côte d’Azur, public transport is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around.

The buses and trams operated by Lignes d’Azur make getting around Nice and the wider Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur remarkably easy. However, there is one rule that frequently catches visitors out: each passenger must have a valid journey, and the ticket or travel card must be properly validated.

It is not uncommon to see a family or group of friends board a bus or tram and assume that, because they are travelling together, tapping their transit card just once covers everyone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way as a unit is a group of individuals. One card can be used for multiple people in certain circumstances, but it must be validated once for each passenger.

Failing to do so can result in a fine if you are checked by a ticket inspector. Being a visitor is no excuse for them. So, before the bus or tram pulls away, make sure everyone in your group has been properly validated. It takes only a few seconds and can save you from a rather unnecessary—and potentially expensive—lesson in the French public transport system.

Travelling together on buses and trams

Lignes d’Azur offers a Multi Voyages option that can be particularly useful for families or groups. One card can contain multiple journeys and, importantly, it can be used by several people travelling together.

However, you cannot simply tap the card once and have it cover everyone. You must validate once for each passenger. So, if four people are travelling together using a Multi Voyages card, the card needs to be validated four times when boarding. The same principle applies when making a permitted connection: each passenger must be validated again.

Lignes d’Azur currently allows journeys to include connections within 74 minutes of the first validation, subject to the network’s rules. Remember to validate every time you board another bus or tram, even when you are making a connection.

The current system uses rechargeable cards rather than the old-style paper ticket system. The anonymous “La Carte” can be used by several travellers, making it a convenient option for visitors travelling as a family or group. Lignes d’Azur also offers its ticketing app.

What about children?

This is where visitors need to pay particular attention.

Children under 4 years old travel free on Lignes d’Azur buses and trams and do not need a transport ticket.

For children aged 4 to under 11, Lignes d’Azur also provides free travel, but this is tied to a personalized “Ma Carte” subscription for children living in the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur. Proof of residence and other documentation are required. The free resident subscription must still be validated when travelling.

This distinction is particularly important for tourists. Do not assume that children aged 4–10 automatically travel free simply because of their age. The current free under-11 Lignes d’Azur subscription is specifically for children who live in the Métropole.

In other words, a visiting family should not rely on the resident children’s free-travel scheme unless they actually qualify for it.

And what about the train?

The rules are different when travelling on the regional TER/ZOU! trains around the Côte d’Azur.

For TER/ZOU! services in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, tickets no longer require traditional compostage (the old practice of stamping a paper ticket in a machine). The regional TER information states that, since January 1, 2023, TER/ZOU! tickets do not require composting, with limited exceptions for certain specific multi-trip student/learner tickets.

Digital tickets are presented during inspection rather than being validated in the same way as a Lignes d’Azur bus or tram ticket. A digital ticket can be presented on a smartphone, and the QR code can be scanned by the conductor. A valid ticket and, where applicable, proof of eligibility for a reduced fare should be kept available throughout the journey.

For TER/ZOU! trains within the region, there are also specific child fares. The current 1 Voyage ZOU! ticket information states that children under 4 travel free, while children aged 4 to under 12 receive a half-price fare.

One simple rule to remember

For visitors, the easiest way to think about it is this:

Bus or tram: every passenger needs a valid journey, and every passenger must be validated.

Travelling as a group: a Multi Voyages ticket can be shared, but you must validate it once for each person travelling.

Children under 4: free on Lignes d’Azur buses and trams.

Children aged 4–10: free travel is available through the Lignes d’Azur resident children’s subscription, but this is not simply a tourist free-fare entitlement.

TER/ZOU! trains: digital tickets do not need traditional composting; keep the ticket available on your phone for inspection and follow the conditions attached to your particular ticket.

The important thing for visitors is not to assume that the rules for the Nice bus and tram network are identical to those for the regional trains. They are separate transport systems with different ticketing arrangements, and understanding that distinction can save you an awkward conversation with a ticket inspector.
