Monaco is preparing for an unusually glittering evening as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation marks two decades of environmental work with a private anniversary gala bringing together internationally recognised names from music, cinema, gastronomy and the arts.
The celebration will take place on Friday, September 18, at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, where Prince Albert II will host an evening designed not only to celebrate the Foundation’s 20-year history, but also to generate support for its continuing environmental programmes.
Among the headline performers will be Christina Aguilera, Plácido Domingo and Sister Sledge, giving the anniversary gathering a distinctly international entertainment line-up.
The evening will also feature two prominent guests of honour: actors Monica Bellucci and Richard Gere, who will join Prince Albert for the celebration inside the Salle Garnier.
The event is expected to combine the glamour traditionally associated with Monaco with a considerably more serious purpose. Following a red-carpet reception and cocktail, guests will sit down to a dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, while performances will take place throughout the evening.
Art will also play a central role. International auctioneer and art dealer Simon de Pury will oversee a special charity auction featuring works of art, collectable objects and exclusive experiences.
But beneath the celebrity names and Monte-Carlo setting is an organisation that has spent the past 20 years attempting to tackle some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Prince Albert II established his foundation in 2006 with a focus on three broad areas: climate change, biodiversity and water resources. Its programmes extend well beyond Monaco, with particular attention given to the Mediterranean, polar regions and some of the world’s least developed countries.
According to the Foundation, its work over the past two decades has supported more than 830 projects around the world. Those initiatives have included marine conservation, protection of threatened species, access to water, climate resilience and scientific research.
That history gives Friday night’s event a significance beyond an anniversary celebration. It is also an opportunity to draw attention to the environmental agenda that has become one of the defining elements of Prince Albert II’s international public work.
Monaco has long been associated with luxury, celebrity and high-profile events, but the Foundation has increasingly positioned the Principality as a platform for environmental diplomacy and conservation. The anniversary gala brings those two sides of Monaco together in particularly spectacular fashion.
The presence of Aguilera, Domingo, Sister Sledge, Bellucci and Gere will inevitably attract attention, but the stated objective of the evening is ultimately focused on what comes next rather than simply celebrating what has already been achieved.
After 20 years of projects spanning oceans, forests, polar environments, biodiversity and climate-related initiatives, the Foundation is entering its next chapter at a time when environmental issues are becoming increasingly difficult to separate from economic, social and geopolitical concerns.
And on Friday night, beneath the chandeliers of the Salle Garnier, Monaco will mark that next chapter in typically extravagant style.
