Monaco may be better known for superyachts, haute couture, luxury cars and some of the world’s most prestigious events, but this September the Principality is putting another kind of luxury firmly in the spotlight: contemporary art.
From 11 to 13 September 2026, art3f Monaco returns to the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, bringing together artists, galleries, collectors and curious visitors for three days dedicated to contemporary creativity.
And unlike some art fairs where the atmosphere can feel intimidating, overly formal or reserved exclusively for serious collectors, art3f has built its identity around making art considerably more approachable.
The philosophy is simple: come, look, discover something you love — and perhaps take it home.
The Monaco edition will showcase more than 200 artists and galleries, with painting, sculpture, photography and other contemporary works presented in an environment designed around encounters and discovery. The fair deliberately moves away from the sometimes rigid conventions of traditional art fairs, favouring a more relaxed and human approach to buying and experiencing art.
That accessibility is perhaps one of art3f’s biggest attractions.
While Monaco has no shortage of galleries and high-end art events, art3f occupies a slightly different space. It is aimed not only at established collectors but also at people who simply enjoy art and want the opportunity to discover emerging and established artists without feeling that they need to arrive with an encyclopedic knowledge of the contemporary art world.
All of the works exhibited are available for purchase, meaning visitors can move from admiring a piece to actually owning it.
There is also an intentionally informal element to the event. Rather than art being something viewed from behind a velvet rope, art3f encourages visitors to meet the artists and gallery owners, talk about the work and discover the stories behind the pieces.
For Monaco, it is a fitting addition to an increasingly diverse September calendar.
The Principality’s cultural programme is particularly busy this year, with September bringing together exhibitions, literature, music, collecting and major international events before the arrival of the Monaco Yacht Show later in the month. art3f forms part of that transition from the quieter summer period into Monaco’s famously busy autumn season.
And the timing is particularly interesting.
September is when Monaco starts to come alive again. The summer crowds begin to thin, the temperatures become more comfortable and the Principality shifts back into its familiar rhythm of cultural events, business gatherings, exhibitions and international visitors.
For anyone who enjoys art but isn’t necessarily interested in the traditional white-walled-gallery experience, art3f offers something different: art without the attitude.
Whether you are looking for a statement piece for your home, searching for the next artist to add to your collection, or simply want to spend an afternoon surrounded by creativity, there should be plenty to discover.
The fair opens on Friday 11 September from 16:00 to 22:00, continues Saturday from 11:00 to 20:00, and closes Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00. Admission is €10 for adults, while accompanied visitors under 18 enter free.
The Friday evening opening also provides an opportunity to experience the fair after hours, when the atmosphere takes on more of a social character — fitting for a city where art and social life have long been intertwined.
Ultimately, art3f isn’t trying to tell visitors what they should like.
It is inviting them to look around, find something that catches their eye and make their own connection with it.
And perhaps that is exactly what contemporary art should be about.
