Christophe Honoré to Chair the Queer Palm Jury at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival

 

To mark its 15th anniversary, the Queer Palm has enlisted a major figure to preside over its jury: Christophe Honoré. A familiar face at the world's most prestigious film festival, Honoré will lead the deliberations on May 23, alongside a still-undisclosed jury.

Earlier this month, Honoré received an emotional ovation at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin during the second-to-last performance of Les Idoles. This play, recently revived after a 2019 tour, tells the story of six writers, filmmakers, and artists whose lives were tragically cut short by AIDS at the end of the 1980s.

No sooner had he drawn the curtain on this chapter of his theatrical work than Honoré returned to the medium that first brought him widespread acclaim: cinema. Following in the footsteps of Lukas Dhont, who presided last year, the French filmmaker and novelist has been chosen as President of the Queer Palm Jury for 2025.

A parallel award to the Cannes official competition, the Queer Palm honors one feature and one short film from the festival's selection that contribute to advancing LGBTQ+ visibility and narratives in cinema.

A Celebrated President

"The Queer Palm is fifteen years old, and I was delighted to accept the invitation to chair its jury," Honoré said. "Fifteen is the age when you hope for everything, fear everything, and are ready to fight for everything," he added, drawing a parallel between the competition's milestone and the passionate spirit of adolescence—an enduring theme in his work, from La Belle Personne (a modern retelling of La Princesse de Clèves) to his recent coming-of-age drama Le Lycéen, which introduced Paul Kircher to French audiences.

A Cannes regular, Honoré has had three films selected for the festival’s official competition: Love Songs (2007), Sorry Angel (2018), and Marcello Mio (2024). An openly queer artist, he champions a committed, progressive cinema. "At a time when contemporary creativity is once again under attack by reactionary forces, it’s all the more urgent to highlight and celebrate queer films," he said. "Being a filmmaker, being part of a sexual minority, and affirming the truth of one's desires in one's work is an act of reckless sincerity—one that makes you vulnerable. That’s why the Queer Palm is so vital at Cannes: it is a refuge and a stage, a battle and an embrace."

The 78th Cannes Film Festival will run from May 13 to 24, 2025, with Juliette Binoche serving as President of the Main Competition Jury. Laurent Lafitte will host the ceremonies, and American actor Robert De Niro will be awarded an honorary Palme d’Or.

The 2025 Queer Palm ceremony will take place on Friday, May 23 in Cannes.

78th Festival de Cannes Poster Unveiled

 

The Cannes Film Festival unveiled its official poster for the 78th edition, paying homage to Claude Lelouch’s 1966 Palme d’Or-winning film, A Man and a Woman. Designed by the creative studio Hartland Villa, the poster features a poignant embrace between the film's stars, Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant, encapsulating the timeless romance that captivated audiences nearly six decades ago.

This year’s poster continues Cannes’ tradition of honoring cinematic milestones, following previous tributes to auteurs like Akira Kurosawa and Peter Weir. By spotlighting A Man and a Woman, the festival not only celebrates a defining moment in French cinema but also underscores its enduring commitment to films that explore human connection and emotional depth.​

The 78th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to run from May 13 to 24, 2025, with French actress Juliette Binoche presiding over the main competition jury. The festival will open with the film Bye Bye, and the Honorary Palme d'Or will be awarded to Robert De Niro during the opening ceremony .​

New Census Reveals Monaco Is Home to 145 Nationalities

 

There has always been rumours both locally and abroad that Monaco is made of mainly wealthy individuals from Russia and Dubai, but a recently released census has quashed all those assumptions.

This new census sheds fresh light on the extraordinary diversity of the Principality of Monaco, revealing that this tiny yet iconic country is now home to citizens of 145 nationalities.

This data not only highlights the cosmopolitan nature of the world's second-smallest country but also offers intriguing insights into the gender and age distribution of its population.

A Global Microcosm

Despite its modest area of just over 2 square kilometers, Monaco boasts an international population that rivals those of major metropolises. According to the new census, the resident population includes people from every continent, with the most represented nationalities being:

• French: 28.4%

• Monegasque (native citizens): 21.5%

• Italian: 18.1%

• British: 7.5%

• Belgian: 2.9%

• Swiss: 2.5%

• German: 2.1%

• American: 1.8%

• Russian: 1.7%

• Other nationalities (135 in total): 13.5%

These "other nationalities" span from neighboring European countries to residents from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania — further reinforcing Monaco’s role as a truly global crossroads.

Gender Breakdown

The census data also shows a near-even gender balance, with a slight majority of female residents:

• Women: 52.3%

• Men: 47.7%

This distribution reflects broader European demographic trends, particularly in older populations, where women typically have a higher life expectancy.

Age Demographics

Monaco’s population is not only diverse but also skews older, a testament to its high standard of living and healthcare. The census reveals the following age structure:

• 0–14 years: 12.1%

• 15–24 years: 9.5%

• 25–54 years: 40.6%

• 55–64 years: 15.3%

• 65 years and over: 22.5%

The largest demographic, adults between 25 and 54, forms the backbone of Monaco’s active workforce, while nearly a quarter of residents are 65 or older, underscoring the principality’s appeal as a retirement haven.

A Principality of Inclusion

Officials from Monaco’s Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) remarked that the results of this census highlight the Principality’s status as a welcoming and harmonious society.

“This level of international representation is rare in such a small country,” said an IMSEE spokesperson. “Monaco is a model of multicultural coexistence.”

Looking Ahead

With its remarkable blend of cultures, languages, and generations, Monaco continues to stand out not only for its luxury and lifestyle but for its human tapestry. Policymakers and city planners are already looking to the future, exploring how to adapt services and infrastructure to this evolving demographic landscape.

From global citizens to native Monegasques, the principality is proving that even in the smallest of places, diversity can thrive.

U.S. buyers are flocking to the Côte d’Azur

 

Real estate continues to be a hot topic here on the French Riviera—whether you’re a local, an agent in the business, or just visiting the region.

Following up on my last post about the so-called "Trump Effect" and how it's influencing real estate here, more news this week has highlighted why Americans—especially from the U.S.—are arriving in growing numbers.

The French Riviera, especially Nice and its surrounding areas, has become increasingly popular among affluent American tourists and expatriates. In fact, recent trends show that nearly one in every two property sales in Nice involves a U.S. buyer.

Since the pandemic, the number of American visitors to the Côte d’Azur and Monaco has risen dramatically. While they were nearly absent during the Covid years, they're now returning with enthusiasm, financial means, and—quite notably—genuine interest in living here, at least part-time.

Local tourism authorities are embracing this shift. According to Côte d’Azur France Tourisme, Americans accounted for 620,000 hotel stays in 2024, a 10% increase compared to 2019. That growth puts them ahead of traditional European travelers from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, giving local tourism and property professionals even more reason to focus on this demographic.

It’s not just the sunshine, sea, and incredible lifestyle drawing them in. New direct flights from major U.S. cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Atlanta into Nice have made the region far more accessible. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport reported a 40% increase in passenger traffic between the U.S. and the Riviera in 2024 alone.

Naturally, the hospitality sector has responded quickly—adding new hotels near the airport and expanding high-end accommodations in central Nice to meet the growing demand.

The real estate market has certainly felt the impact. As a North American myself (from Canada), it's no surprise that most of my clientele also comes from across the Atlantic. And I'm always excited to introduce them to the balance of work, life, and leisure that the Riviera so effortlessly offers.

I wholeheartedly agree with Olivier Roquin of Nice’s Agence Winter, who recently told France 3 Côte d’Azur that he’s seen a major uptick in American buyers, stating, “One in two sales [in the city] is with Americans.”

These LGBTQ+ buyers are typically over 50, financially comfortable, and have the luxury of time. They're often drawn to Belle Époque-style properties in the €400,000 to €800,000 range, especially those within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the beach.

Roquin attributes this trend to a mix of political and lifestyle factors, explaining, “Politics may be the trigger, but the decision to come to Nice is about the setting. And they admire President Macron, who represents European stability.”

From my own experience, many American clients say the same thing: they’re looking for peace of mind—safety, security, and a healthier pace of life—even if it’s just for a few months a year.

Monaco, too, is seeing a gradual rise in American residents. According to the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE), there were 449 American residents in the Principality in 2023, up from 366 in 2016. While the increase is modest, it’s consistent.

However, some hurdles remain. U.S. tax obligations and strict banking rules under FATCA have made it difficult for Americans to open accounts in Monaco. As a result, many choose to settle in nearby French towns that offer the best of both worlds: Riviera charm with close access to Monaco’s services and lifestyle.

Rencontres Cinématographiques In&Out 2025

 

The In&Out Film Festival (also known as the Rencontres Cinématographiques In&Out Nice), returns for its 17th edition from April 17-28th, inviting us to see the world differently, embrace new challenges, and add a spark of joy.

Over the course of twelve days, attendees can look forward to approximately thirty film screenings, many of which are premieres. The festival also features interactions with artists and a variety of related events such as exhibitions, readings, performances, and conferences that delve into themes pertinent to the LGBTQ+ community.

This year, In&Out celebrates “lesbian genius” with a dedicated weekend focused on lesbian visibility. Alongside a striking poster by Romy Alizée, the program includes screenings, talks, roundtables, readings, and workshops—all honoring women who love women.

A special spotlight will be given to Florent Gouëlou (aka Javel Habibi), a filmmaker and drag performer, who will bring the spirit of his legendary Parisian nights at La Flèche d'Or.

Amid rising global tensions and growing reactionary politics, the festival turns to voices of resistance. Abdellah Taïa (Morocco) and Karim Kattan (Palestine), both acclaimed writers, will share their perspectives on identity, belonging, and the place of LGBTQIA+ communities in today’s world.

The festival’s Panorama section offers a rich lineup of premieres, including:

In&Out will also pay tribute to trailblazing voices. A retrospective honors Lionel Soukaz, a beloved filmmaker and friend of the festival, through his seminal work Race d’Ep (1979). In doing so, it also commemorates Magnus Hirschfeld, the first LGBTQIA+ rights activist, who died in exile in Nice 90 years ago.

The legendary Paul Vecchiali will be remembered through films from his iconic production company, Diagonale.

Short films take center stage once more with the return of the popular “Queer-métrage” Night and the launch of "Short en queer DIY"—a 12-day filmmaking challenge open to creatives of all levels.

By celebrating queer cinema in all its forms and encouraging its production, In&Out continues to answer the essential need for queer visibility, culture, and storytelling.

Regardless of where you stand politically, the so-called “Trump Effect”—as it’s increasingly being referred to in Europe—is already leaving its mark here on the Côte d’Azur. While we watch events unfold from afar, the ripple effects are being felt in several areas of daily life, especially within the local real estate market.

As a Canadian expat, I started discussing these trends with partner agencies well before the U.S. presidential election. As there has been a noticeable uptick in inquiries from Americans considering their options—many of whom were clearly contemplating a Plan B. What was once a cautious curiosity has now been evolving into concrete decisions.

And here in France, that shift is unmistakably underway.

Whether people are searching for a secondary residence or planning a permanent move, the interest is steady and growing. Most of the inquiries are from investors drawn to high-end properties—seafront villas, elegant countryside estates, luxury apartments in iconic neighborhoods, and historic homes—particularly in the French Riviera and Paris.

The first thing I often hear, whether by phone, email, or in person, is a desire for safety, stability, and peace of mind. Even if it’s just for a few months each year, people are seeking a lifestyle that feels grounded and secure.

And frankly, they’ve found the ideal place. The French Riviera offers more than just natural beauty—from the Mediterranean coastline to charming hilltop villages—it also provides a calm, balanced pace of life. The Côte d’Azur feels both vibrant and serene, with endless opportunities for exploration and connection, and a truly international community.

Weekend Bear by Bear d'Azur

The beautiful city of Nice is set to host the highly anticipated Élection Mister Bear d'Azur 2025 from April 11 to 13, 2025. Organized by Bear d'Azur, this annual event celebrates the diversity and pride of the gay bear community in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

And the big question remains: Who will be crowned the next MISTER BEAR D'AZUR?!

Event Highlights

Élection Mister Bear d'Azur 2025
The heart of the weekend is the official Mister Bear d'Azur election. Candidates—gay men with beards (even short ones!)—are chosen for their community spirit and inclusive energy. The winner will proudly represent the bear community in the region and beyond.

Festivities Across Four Venues
Four partner establishments will host themed parties, social gatherings, and special activities throughout the weekend.

Community & Visibility
More than just a party, this event fosters a strong sense of belonging while promoting the bear community within the broader LGBTQ+ landscape.
